By hearing, chanting, and remembering The Supreme Lord’s names, forms, and pastimes, we attain pure Love for Him! Especially in Kali Yuga, by Hari naama sankirtan- (singing in congregation the praises and names of the Supreme Lord Hari) all perfection is attained! All scriptures proclaim this in one voice!
Traditionally, All hymns, songs, and glorifications of The lord and devotees were always composed in Sanskrit, which known by Indian scholars.
Vaishnavas, out of their causeless mercy began composing these same hymns in languages that the common person could understand, mainly in Hindi and Bengali. Like Srila Narottam Das Thakur, Tulasidas, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur, etc.
However just as sanskrit is incomprehensible for general indian devotees, for western english speaking devotees, Bengali and Hindi are equally not understood. For the general english speaking devotee, there has been a need for more.
Now again by the mercy of the Pure devotees of the Lord, we have the English song book.
The renditions are very direct and concise translations of the originals. Great measures were taken that the meaning is preserved and the teachings are accurate, not just a general inspiration or loose meaning of the original work.
