His Divine Grace Bhakti Rakshaka Shridhar Dev Goswami

His Divine Grace Sri Srila Bhakti Rakshaka Sridhara Deva Goswami Maharaja, the founder of the Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Matha, was born in India in 1895, in a respected Brahmana family of the Bhattacarya order, at Hapaniya, District Burdwan, West Bengal. He received his education at Baharamapur University.

Having taken his pious birth in Sri Gauda-Mandal, the holy lands where Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu exhibited His divine pastimes on this earth, Srila Sridhara Maharaja, from his very childhood, had a natural affinity for the mission of Sri Chaitanya Sankirtana, the Grand Congregational Chanting of the Holy Names of the Supreme Lord.

tat te’ nukampam susamiksamano

bhunjana evathma-krtam vipakam

hrd-vag-vapurbhir vidhdhan namas te

jiveta yo mukti-pade sa daya-bhak

(Bhagavatam, 10.14.8)

With the help of the Guru, the Scriptures, and the previous experienced persons, I shall try to stand the test, that “Yes, because the bile is so, everything is tasting bitter. But this process will remove the bile. I shall have to wait for some time, and when the bile is gone, I shall taste sugar candy as sweet.”

When normal, I will be able to feel that so many sweet waves are coming from all around to me. Maya santusta manasah, sarvvah sukhamaya disah (Bhagavatam, 11.14.12) “For one who is satisfied with Me, then all the directions, all the four directions will bring only good news to him.” All waves will carry only welfare to that person who is satisfied with God only and nothing else. “I want God, and His interests are my interest. He is the loving father, guardian, or friend of everyone.”

Now we are distracted and have many different interests, but if we can put God’s interest in the centre, then we shall be able to find, to read, that from all directions only good news is coming to me – no bad or unfavourable news. All favourable news will come to me if I can be on that level, that plane, if my ego can take a stand there. In that universal wave, every vibration will only carry favourable news to me. Maya santusta manasah, “He who is satisfied with Me alone, sarvvah sukhamaya disah, he will see that all the directions are only carrying happy news to him, cent-per-cent good news”. So a readjustment is necessary, and religion means proper adjustment. We are now incorrectly adjusted and are concerned with different types of separate interests; that is the difficulty. We have to change and find out the universal interest. That universal wave is the most fundamental current.

Sa vai pumsam paro dharmmo: The highest type of duty for everyone is yato bhaktir adhoksaje, that your attention, your submission will go to Adhoksaja, that unknown universal guardian. Ahaituky-apratihata: this submission is causeless and can never be opposed. The original vibration is forever existing. It is self-existent: none can have created that. It is eternally continuing. and none can oppose it – that wave is irresistible. Try to identify your interest with that wave. That is bhakti, bhakti proper. This is the definition of bhakti: sa vai pumsam paro dharmmo; the highest duty of everyone, every soul, is this. That bhakti is adhoksaja. Your attention, your interest should be diverted towards the infinite, to the unknown, to the unknown quarter, up to the Nth degree. The mathematicians speak of calculating, continuing to the Nth degree. But this is beyond the Nth degree. Yato bhaktir adhoksaje. What are its qualities? Ahaituki and apratihata. Ahaituki: No hetu, no cause; it is causeless. And that is eternal, apratihata; it can never be stopped. None can oppose it; none can give any hindrance to it. It is so forceful and continuous, forcefully continuous, that none can stop it.

Such is the original vibration, and that is all sweet, all-accommodating, and all-embracing. So this is the advice of Bhagavatam and Mahaprabhu, and there we will find the wave of love, prema. This is most accommodating – comprehensive. And fulfillment is given in that way: bhakti, prema-bhakti – love. Without love, none can be, none can hold a dignified position. Everything else is defective – only love is perfect. Justice is also defective. Justice comes to divide things between many; no unity results. This is the position of justice. But above that is the land of affection, the land of love: prema-bhumi. Love only can be the most comprehensive cause; that can accommodate or harmonize anything and everything. Love is the most generous, the most accommodating, and the most fulfilling.

This is the conclusion of the Srimad-Bhagavatam, which has been conceived as the ripe fruit of the Veda. The ripe fruit of the Veda means that it is revealed truth. Revealed truth is that which does not originate from the experience of so many fallen souls, from their limited brains. No, it is coming from above, from the land of the eternally extended truth. And ripe fruit means it is in its full-fledged position: the highest conception of love. There we will find love, beauty, affection, mercy, charm. They are all similar, of the same taste and kind.

Our soul must go to that land of love. This body will remain here. Our mind which is always seeking the limited happiness of this world will also be dissolved. They will all disappear. At the present, the body and the mind are our ‘property’. But the inner factor, the soul – that conscious unit which is within us – can only be a member of that soil. Soul is our proper self, and these other things are all encasements. The mental system and the physical system are encasements, and they want this mortal world. That is their misconception.

Service of Vrajavasi

Srila BR Sridhara Maharaja

No Exploiting Sense in Vrndavan

The exploiting sense is absent in Vraja. We may conceive this or we may not conceive this, but still everything there is only actuated by the motive of service. And there is the beauty. Tat paratvena nirmalam – the nirmalata, the purity, depends only on how much it is for the satisfaction of the centre. The criterion of measuring the purity is this - otherwise we will be here in the land of exploitation. There, in that plane, there is no exploitation, but the whole thing is informal. All is full of service, with purity - otherwise there is no entrance in that domain.

So we must be very cautious about the real theme of exploitation. What does this mean? There is no exploitation there - that is divinity. Without dedication, without serving, no divinity is possible -it is not possible to enter into Vrndavan, what to speak of Sivaloka or Vaikuntha-loka? Madhurya-rasa is most intensive there. These are the things which we should know. We should try to keep the conception of such a standard on our head. However far away it may be, we may not make any easy compromise with the very cheap things in this world. Our future will depend on our highest ideal.

Service of Vrajavasi

Vraja-vasi-gana pracaraka-dhana, pratistha-bhiksuka ta’ra nahe sava - the pracaraka (preachers) desire is to attain the service of the vraja-vasi – their aim is not mundane money. Their aim is the grace of a vraja-vasi. That they want. Dhana means they hanker after the wealth and qualities of vraja-vasis. That is their desire, their will. The foot dust of the vraja-vasis is the wealth of the genuine preacher. They don’t want any admiration from the ordinary mass of this world – no admiration, no attraction do they want from the mass.

“Oh, he is a big personality, he is doing very great service” – all these things they do not want. Their only aim is to get the foot dust of the vraja-vasis, that is their wealth. Tanra se hetu pracara – they cannot but do the preaching of krsna-nama – the inspiration is coming from within, not from the external world. They cannot stop the flow of their hearts to praise Krsna. It is coming from within, not from outside. Pratisthasa hina – no admiration, nothing of the kind do they want from the outside ordinary people of the mundane world. His internal self engages him to speak about Krsna. There is no reward nor rebuke from the outside world. The cause of his action is the eternal flow. It is coming from within.

Prana ache tanra se hetu pracara. His very life is meant for that. Prana means life, prana means vitality, inner urge, the very internal energy. In other words, it is devotion, svarupa-sakti, not any artificial thing there. Svarupa-sakti is within. Only that should be discovered. That is within, the inner wealth, and only the outer cover has checked the activities of svarupa-sakti – that of distributing this divine message to one and all.

Radhe !

Radha Kunda

Gurudev's affectionate words about Srila Narayan Maharaj

Sree Sree Guru Gaurangau Jayatah! Pure devotees advent to this mortal world by the Will of Supreme Lord and by their own will and perform various pastimes. By exhibiting the pastimes of illness they give service opportunity to the souls of this world for their own deliverance. At present, Pujyapad Bhakti Vedanta Narayan Maharaj, the Founder of International Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti, is outwardly exhibiting severe illness having detected with malignancy in the intestine.

Our Most Revered Srila Gurudev has a spiritual connection with him and both of them are very affectionate brothers. It is a dis-service if we do not convey this message to Our Most Revered Srila Gurudev. Considering Srila Gurudev's affection and love for the Vaishnavas, it would be heart breaking for Him to listen to this news. Either way was going to be difficult for us. On October 10, 2010 I got a call from Sri Vrindavan Prabhu from Denmark (a disciple of Srila Narayan Maharaj) telling me the urgency of the situation. I called Sri Ramchandra Prabhu, in-charge of Math in Janakpuri, New Delhi and also had an opportunity to speak to Srila Madhav Maharaj, the personal servant of Srila Narayan Maharaj. Both were very kind to inform me the latest about Srila Narayan Maharaj. Our god-brother, Sri Rasvihari Prabhu also called few other disciples of Srila Narayan Maharaj to get his latest health updates. Sri Rasvihari Prabhu and I conveyed the message to Our Most Revered Srila Gurudev in brief. Srila Gurudev's eyes were filled with tears as soon as He heard this. Later we arranged for a telephonic conversation with Srila Madhav Maharaj. Srila Gurudev remarked that as Srila Narayan goswami Maharaj did extensive preaching programs all over and he took lot of pressure on his body. Srila Gurudev remembered the days when Srila Narayana Maharaj used to visit our Vinod Vani Gaudiya Math in Vrindavan and also their meetings on several occasions.

Srila Gurudev then said to Sri Madhav Maharaj, "You should take good care of him. You should try your best. We should not give up our efforts." Later He added, "I also had heart difficulty and one doctor had put 5 stents in my heart. Even I cannot do extensive travels." The conversation took place for almost 7-8 mins and there was lot of love and affection shared during that time. When Srila Madhav Maharaj said that there is some improvement in the health of Srila Maharaj, Our Most Revered Gurudev felt happy. We pray to the Lord for a speedy recovery of Srila Narayan Maharaj and continue his preaching programs.

Killing of Putana by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura Prabhupada

http://bvml.org/SBSST/putana.htm

The blue infant Krishna is shown killing the demoness Putana, who had disguised herself as a beautiful woman in order to kill Him. Sensing her perfidy, Krishna is able to suck up her poison milk and drain her of life without harming Himself. The demoness, revealed in her true form, lies prostrate beneath him. Two women and a child prostrate toward the giant figure and a house is seen to the left. The picture is made more dramatic by the large field of red in the background. Red is often used in early paintings to highlight the emotional vibrancy of an event. The style of this work is transitional between that of early indigenous Indian paintings and the more naturalistic style of the Mughals that was adopted at the court of Bikaner as early as the 1630s.

The Serpent Kaliya

The Serpent KaliyaThe Serpent Kaliya

por Chandra Kala, quinta, 28 de outubro de 2010 às 02:52

http://bvml.org/SBSST/kaliya.htm

The following essay was printed in the May 1932 edition of The Harmonist, or Sree Sajjanatoshani.

There is a beautiful lake of very sweet water in the Yamuna which bears the name of Kaliya. This lake happened to be infested by a most venomous Serpent from whom the lake derives its name. On a certain day while the cow-boys of Braja were out pasturing their calves on the wooded banks of the Yamuna they happened to feel thirsty and not knowing that the water of the lake had been poisoned by Kaliya drank of its water which resulted in their instantaneous death. On being apprised of their plight Krishna came to the spot and restored them to life.

Thereafter Krishna got down into the lake with the intention of sporting in its water. This enraged the hideous monster who forthwith came out of the depths of the lake in the company of his adherents and fell upon Krishna coiling Him up in their great hoods for Kaliya was a thousand-hooded Serpent and his brood were equally formidable.

The Pastimes of Damodara by Tridandisvami Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaja

The Pastimes of Damodara by Tridandisvami Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaja

http://bvml.org/SBNM/lectures/1996_tpod.html

[From a Lecture Series on the Song, Sri Damodarastakam in Vrndavana, India: 1996]

Respected Readers, Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Sri Guru and Gauranga.

The month of Kartika (Oct-Nov) bares one of the most significant devotional festivals of the Gaudiya Vaisnava year. For its duration, there is a special program of worship of Sri Krsna in His Damodara-lila, in which He is bound with a rope by His mother, Yasoda. For this reason, it is also known as the month of Damodara.

The beautiful prayer affiliated with this month, "Sri Damodarastakam", which was spoken in ancient times by Sri Satyavrata Muni in a conversation with Sri Narada Muni and Saunaka Rsi and which appears in the Padma Purana, is sung morning and evening throughout the month of Damodara.

Srila Narayana Maharaja's erudite discourses on the multiple levels of meaning surrounding Damodara-lila and "Sri Damodarastakam" have been nurturing and uplifting devotees for many years during the month of Kartika. Although the different topics and siddhantic points are repeated every year, Srila Narayana Maharaja's sublime understandings give each lecture its own subtle slant, providing deeper and deeper perspectives. Srila Narayana Maharaja wants us to take hold of these messages and process them deep within our hearts.

["The Lord appeared in the mortal world by His internal potency, yogamaya. He came in His eternal form, which is just suitable for His pastimes. These pastimes were wonderful for everyone, even for those proud of their own opulence, including the Lord Himself in His form as the Lord of Vaikuntha. Thus His [Sri Krsna's] transcendental body is the ornament of all ornaments.

Krsna is so beautiful.
